A Dolls House: Appearance vs Reality
A Dolls House: Appearance vs Reality Choosing to live your life independently or dependently is a life changing moment: it comes without warning, and can turn your whole life upside down. Either way, nothing will ever be the same. The book, A Dolls House, by Henrik Ibsen, is about characters who are all dealing with the transition of becoming either dependent or independent. They may seem happy to other people and to the readers at first, but their appearances are really a lie. Appearance and reality are often misunderstood; just because someone may seem happy, this does not mean they lead a rich and more compelling life in comparison to someone else. Mrs. Lindes journey from independence to marriage is a foil to Noras life. At the beginning of the play Nora may seem dependant but she is actually just as independent as Mrs. Linde claims to be. In order for Nora to pay the loan that she owed Krogstad, Nora saved money that Torvald gave her for dresses, and she also found a little job. Nora says, [she] was lucky enough to get a lot of copying [done and] to do so, (à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦) [she] locked [her]self up and sat writing every evening until quite late at night. Many a time [she] was desperately tired, but all was the same it was a tremendous pleasure to sit there working and earning money. It was like being a man (Ibsen 13). When Nora says she felt like a man it meant she felt like she was taking on responsibilities, and having a sense of purpose in life. In other words to feel like a man in the eighteen-hundreds it must have meant you were more independent. In Noras mind she must have thought she was just as self-ruling as Mrs. Linde. Although Mrs. Linde may work, she dislikes it, and it has also aged her terribly. Mrs. Linde says she needs someone to depend on because she is quite alone in the world-[her] life is so dreadfully empty and [she] feel[s] so forsaken. There is not the least pleasure in working for ones self. Niles, give me someone and something to work for (53). Mrs. Linde may seem to be a strong willed women, but in reality she needs someone to provide for her and depend on. At the end of the play Nora chooses a life of independence by leaving Torvald while Mrs. Linde reunites with her long love Mr. Krogstad, and chooses a life of dependence. Although Mrs. Linde and Nora may have lived their lives in an opposite direction; Mrs. Linde and Nora Helmer both started a life of marriage without true love for their husbands. Mrs Linde married her ex-husband because her father passed away and she had to raise her younger brothers. She married him primarily for financial stability because her mother was alive then [but] was bedridden and helpless, and [she] had to provide for my two younger brothers; so [she] did not think [she] was justified in refusing his offer (9). The fact that Mrs. Linde refers to her ex-husbands proposal as an offer means she saw it as a business transaction. In other words this is a symbiotic relationship. Mrs. Linde needed financial stability and her ex-husband needed a wife. On the other hand Nora married Mr. Helmer even though she didnt love him. It seems as though she was influenced by her fathers opinions: when I was at home with Papa he told me his opinion about everything, and so I had the same opinions; and if I differed from him I concealed the fact, because he would not have liked it. And when I came to live with you I simply transferred from Papas hands to yours. You arranged everything according to your own taste, and so I got the same taste as you-or else I pretended to (66). Noras father had brainwashed Nora to such a point that she took on the same beliefs as him with out even noticing it. Nora then married Torvald and became even more oblivious to fact that she was being controlled. It is quite stumbling how life has forced both Nora Helmer and Mrs. Linde to start a life of marriage without true love for their husbands. As the play progresses we see how Nora is actually more independent then we expected her to be. We also find out that although Mrs. Linde works for herself, she needs a purpose in life, which to her means having a family. Although we only discover that Nora never loved Mr. Helmer at the end of a Dolls House, throughout the whole play there have been small amounts rebellious behavior from Nora towards Mr Helmer. Although Mr. Helmer had forbidden Nora from eating macaroons, she still does it anyways: What, macaroons? I thought they were forbidden here. Yes, but theses are some Christine gave me. (17). Throughout the play Nora has shown signs of independence even though the readers were to believe she was not. Also Nora was forbidden to take out a loan by Torvald and by the law. Nora had taken out the loan despite the laws and Torvalds wishes. Appearances can be deceiving; just because a person may appear to be content, and carefree with their life, it does not necessarily mean they actually life a life of glamour. In the book A Dolls House Mrs Linde is the force of truth in Noras life. Although Mrs. Linde may not be the person to ask for marital advice she has lived a life similar to Noras just backwards. At the beginning of A Dolls House readers believe Nora is just a silly, selfish and spoiled character, but later readers find out that she is actually a strong willed and intelligent woman. Just like Mrs. Linde Nora proves she is able to work for herself, and that she understands business transactions without a males approval. On the other hand Mrs. Linde feels she needs a husband and children to have a purpose in life. In other words Mrs. Linde has chosen a life of dependence with Mr. Krogstand while Nora prefers to live her life independently and liberal minded. Clearly Mrs. Lindes and Noras appearances at the beginnin g of the play do not reflect their reality. Sadly as in the play this may be a reality for many people today. Does your appearance to others also reflect your reality? Work Cited Ibsen, Henrik, A Dolls House. New York: Dover, 1992. Print

Ernest Hemingway :: essays research papers
Ernest Hemingway lived his life as he wanted. His writing touched the hearts of millions. His sentences were short and to the point but his novels strong and unforgettable. He wrote about what he felt like writing about. On July 21, 1899, Ernest Hemingway was born. He was created by Dr. Clarence Edmonds and Grace Hall Hemingway. His hometown was a small town named Oak Park. Oak Park was in Illinois. His father was a practicing doctor, and later taught him how to hunt and fish. His mother on the other hand had wished that he would become a professional musician. Hemingway did not like his mother and when he grew up he would call her "the old bitch". He grew up in a somewhat religious environment. He went to Oak Park and River Forest High School, which is where he realized his writing gift. Besides writing, other activities that he loved included swimming, and boxing. When he was18 years old he had an important decision to make he could either move to Kansas city, which was growing more and more every day, or he could go to collage. His final choice was that he would move to Kansas City. In Kansas City he got a job as a cub reporter on the Kansas City Star. At the train station his father, who latter on in Ernest's life would commit suicide which would totally disgust Ernest, kissed his son goodbye with tears in his eyes. This exact moment in time would be the soul purpose for a book he wrote called "For Whom the Bell Tolls". One of the reasons why he wrote that book is because he felt so much older than his father at that time that he could hardly bear it any longer. While he was at Kansas City he was quite and did not stand out much. He stayed to himself. He went through a little culture shock due to the fact that Kansas City was a lot more complex than Oak Hill was. His writing style was first introduced by the Star. His writing was brief, and to the point. His writing had to be like that at the time because he was a news writer, but he would carry that style over to fiction when the time came. In May of 1918, Hemingway wanted to join the Army but could not due to a defective left eye which he inherited from his mother.

Intro to Finance Essay
An efficient financial system promotes intermediaries that successfully link ââ¬Å"saversâ⬠from ââ¬Å"borrowersâ⬠(Mankiw). There are two widely-known financial intermediaries namely the banks and mutual funds. Banks are highly accessible to the general public are generally more cost advantageous that direct lending. Generally, the banks main purpose in the economy is to take in deposits from savers and ââ¬Å"use these deposits to make loans to people who want to borrowâ⬠(Mankiw, N. Gregory, 2001, Principles of Economics, p. 557). Banks incur costs by paying interest on these deposits and earn from these by charging higher interest rates on loan borrowers. Second to this, banks play an important role in the economy as they ââ¬Å"facilitate the purchases of goods and services by allowing people to write checks against their depositsâ⬠(Mankiw, N. Gregory, 2001, Principles of Economics, p. 557). In this manner, the economy benefits from banks by this accessible medium of exchange. Unlike stocks or bonds which are not as immediate, checks make it easier for the public to exercise their monetary transactions. Mutual funds, on the other hand, are institutions that use the proceeds of selling shares in buying portfolios of stocks and bonds where they derive their profits. The financial markets become more accessible and efficient because mutual funds allow people with small savings to become owners and creditors of numerous companies. Also, mutual funds allow its shareholders the benefit of risk diversification wherein a single fund can carry a roster of diverse portfolios in stocks and bonds. A broker can either be an individual or a corporate entity that earns a fee-based profit by performing buy and sell orders from investors and/ or clients. A good example of this is a brokerage firm that specializes in trading company stocks and securities. A brokerââ¬â¢s main functions in the financial market would include basic execution of buying and selling shares, and financial advisory to clients regarding the management of their shares/ stocks. With the emergence of automation and popular online brokerage firms, traditional brokers have redefined their place in the industry. Most popular online brokerage firms such as Ameritrade and E*Trade offer lower fees to investors as opposed to traditional brokers. Financial and Investment Advisory are also automated online via innovative investment software tools. With information becoming more accessible because of the internet, traditional brokers are now transitioning into online brokers wherein online orders are still routed to and monitored by them; and with reduced client-interface for advisories.

A Leader At A Senior Leader - 1162 Words
When I filled out the diagnostic score sheet for a senior leader I know, I was not surprised by the results. This leader is nearing the end of her career and I have often heard her joke that she just doesnââ¬â¢t have ââ¬Å"any adrenaline leftâ⬠and this is reflected in her leadership style. The total score I gave this leader was 12 with 4.5 for Noble Purpose, 3 for Ceaseless Ambition, 3.5 for Candor and 1 for Passion. The area where I feel this leader excels is Noble Purpose. I have never been in a meeting with this leader where she has not stressed that what we do is all about the patient and her actions clearly support the mission, vision and values of our organization (Gilbert, 2007). When I think of this leader the disciplines of ceaselessâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It also created the feeling that she is out of touch with current issues and dynamics of bedside care. The lack of visible leadership caused frustration for the staff and lead to dissatisfaction and ethical erosion in the form of decreased loyalty. I am pleased to say that based on the results of our last several employee satisfaction surveys, and encouragement from her directors, this senior leader has recognized her disconnect with middle management and staff and has started to host meetings on the inpatient units where she will bring a meal and the staff can ask her questions. This was a courageous move for her and I was not certain how it would be received, however, I am pleased to say, the results have been positive. The staff is making an effort to attending their scheduled meeting and attendance has been good. Staff questions have been insightful and respectful. It has given staff the opportunity to see and hear from their senior leader, her vision and to understand her passion for patient care and the concern she has for staff, directly from her and for her to hear concerns and frustrations directly from staff. This simple effort to interact with staff on a more p ersonal basis has significantly changed her reputation as a leader. A Collection of Classic Love Poetry for Your Sweetheart
The feelings of romantic love are pretty universal ââ¬â even if it seems like nobody could ever have felt the way you do; thats universal, too. And thats why songs and poems often say just what youre feeling ââ¬â only better than you can express it. If you want to tell your sweetheart just how you feel about him or her, whether its Valentines Day or any old day, but you cant quite find the just the rightà words, maybe these classic poems from some of the greatest poets in the English language might fit the bill or give you some ideas. Heres a line that is so famous ââ¬â and expresses such universality ââ¬â that it has become part of the language. Its from Christopher Marlowes Hero and Leander, and he wrote this in 1598: Whoever loved, that loved not at first sight? Timeless. Sonnet 18 by William Shakespeare Shakespeares Sonnet 18, written in 1609, is one of the most famous and quoted love poems of all time. Its obvious use of metaphor in the comparison of the subject of the poem to a summers day is hard to miss ââ¬â the subject being much superior to that grandest of seasons. The poems most famous lines are at the beginning, with the metaphor in full view: Shall I compare thee to a summerââ¬â¢s day?Thou art more lovely and more temperate:Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,And summerââ¬â¢s lease hath all too short a date ... A Red, Red Rose by Robert Burns Scottish poet Robert Burns wrote this to his love in 1794, and it is one of the most quoted and famous love poems of all time in the English language. Throughout the poem, Burns uses simile as an effective literary device to describe his feelings. The first stanza is the most well-known: O my Luveââ¬â¢s like a red, red rose,Thatââ¬â¢s newly sprung in June:O my Luveââ¬â¢s like theà melodie,Thatââ¬â¢s sweetlyà playââ¬â¢dà in tune. Loves Philosophyà by Percy Bysshe Shelley Once again, a metaphor is the literary device of choice in a love poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley from 1819, a prominent English Romantic poet. He uses metaphor again and again, to great effect, to make his point ââ¬â which is crystal clear. Heres the first stanza: The fountains mingle with the riverAnd the rivers with the Ocean,The winds of Heaven mix for everWith a sweet emotion;Nothing in the world is single; All things by a law divineIn one spirit meet and mingle. Why not I with thine?ââ¬â Sonnet 43à by Elizabeth Barrett Browning This sonnet by Elizabeth Barrett Browning,à published in the collection Sonnets From the Portuguese in 1850, is one of 44 love sonnets. This one is without a doubt the most famous and most quoted of her sonnets and also in all of the poems in the English language. She was married to the Victorian poet Robert Browning, and he is the subject of these sonnets.à This sonnet is a metaphor upon metaphor and extremely personal, which is likely why it resonates. The first lines are so well-known that nearly everyone recognizes them: How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.I love thee to the depth and breadth and heightMy soul can reach, when feeling out of sightFor the ends of Being and ideal Grace. In Excelsisà à by Amy Lowell In this much more modern take on the poetic form, written in 1922, Amy Lowell uses simile, metaphor, and symbolism to express this most powerful feeling of romantic love. The imagery is more potent and elemental than that of earlier poets, and the writing resembles the stream of consciousness style. The first few lines give a hint of whats to come: Youââ¬âyouââ¬âYour shadow is sunlight on a plate of silver;Your footsteps, theà seeding-placeà of lilies;Your hands moving, a chime of bells across a windless air.

He added that there are learning style characteristics that differentiate drop-outs or high risk students from well performing students. These characteristics include frequent opportunities for mobility, different choices, variety of instruction resources, environment and s ociological grouping, learning during late morning, afternoon or evening, informal seating, low light illumination and tactual or visual introductory resources. These factors may be the cause/s of the students poor performance in their classes. In another article by Tenedoro (2010), he stated that teachers need to be aware that students have prior beliefs and an incomplete understanding of things that may be in conflict with the things taught at school. This means that studentsââ¬â¢ prior knowledge can either help or hinder learning as students as the knowledge they bring to the classroom influences how they interpret what they learn. Also, if studentsââ¬â¢ prior knowledge is robust and accurate, it provides a strong foundation for building new knowledge. Standard Language Ideology and Discriminatory â⬠Free Samples
Question: Discuss about the Standard Language Ideology and Discriminatory. Answer: Introduction Primarily, language discrimination is based on accent, vocabulary and syntax. Undoubtedly, any form of discrimination is not good for the people treated differently. Noteworthy, the existence of the United States of America Civil Rights Act of 1964, is sufficient proof of the existence of various forms of discrimination to which the Act seeks to redress(Lippi-Green.2015).Specifically, the Act prohibits workplace discrimination based on the language traits of the employee based on the fact that a potential customer or employer find the worker's language trait not appealing thus asserting to the fact that discrimination based on a person accent is real as it gets. In addition, the United States government implemented a complain mechanism for the victims. This further alludes to the reality of the existence of accent based discrimination. Also, the fact that there are several tried cases reported since the year 1972 shows that there are victims of language-based discrimination. However, not all cases of language-based discrimination are reported due to various reasons. Arguably, justice is affected by language (Eades,1996).There are high percentages of indigenous imprisoned persons to which some people think it is due to their limited communication skills or their systemic language differences. Undoubtedly, the fact that an accused person is unable to clearly understand what goes on in his or her own trial, is hardly a fair trial but also a violation of the accused persons right to justice. For persons affected by language-based discrimination, personal frustration missed opportunities, the unfair trial is some of the consequences experienced by the victim (Hedley, 2006).Every human being is entitled to a right of fair trial which includes the right to defend oneself against the allegations. One such way is giving testimony in ones favor to which Robyn, was not accorded. Infringement of basic human rights is a direct and relatable consequence of language-based discrimination. This goes to show how negatively such language-based discrimination effects. According to Eades, indigenous persons are unable to seek clarification or unable to fully understand the proceedings against them due to the systemic language differences. This is highly likely to lead to a miscarriage of justice. Essentially, Language discrimination effects are purely negative. The affected party feels ashamed and sometimes feels the need to be pretentious (Tan, n .d).Also, injustice can be a product of discrimination as evidenced by the lack of opportunity to defend oneself by giving evidence and workplace language based discrimination (Hedley, 2006: Lippi-Green, 1994).Owing to the fact that the accused trial took part without her active involvement is highly unjust. Profoundly, Lippi Green and Hedley agree that discrimination has negative consequences on their victims. Mainly, Lippi focuses on workplace discrimination whereas Hedley focuses on legal injustice .However, both agree that discrimination are a violation of human rights and negatively impact on the victims. Conclusion Conclusively, language based discrimination negatively impacts on the victims. However, legal avenues such as legislation and related agencies can provide redress .Language discrimination has led to unjust legal proceedings, workplace injustices, poor academic scores in English among other limited experiences. Also, language impacts on the future careers of indigenous people .However, through legal channels such as legislations, agencies, the negative effects can be addressed. All in all no person deserves to be discriminated on any count. References Eades, D. (1996).Legal Recognition of cultural differences in communication: The case of Robyn Kina..
