The fight with the mythical serpent has scarcely any similitudes contrasted with different fights Beowulf persevered. Beowulf is an incredible and regarded legend. As a youngster, he crushes two animals that threaten Hoarders individuals. This gains him an extraordinary spot in Hoarders heart as his child.

When Common Knowledge Isnt So Common

When Common Knowledge Isnt So Common (0) A cat is a common pet. Chocolate is a common candy. The fact that trees are plants is common knowledge but what does ‘common knowledge’ mean exactly? Whether your teacher requires MLA, APA, Chicago Manual of Style, or another citation format, you already know how important it is to cite the sources used in any academic papers you write. But you might not know about a little citation loophole that we call common knowledge. Interested? What is common knowledge? Common knowledge is, as the name suggests, information that could reasonably be known by the average person. For example: Grass is green Fish live in water China is a country in Asia An adverb is a part of speech Ice melts when exposed to heat Committing plagiarism is bad Common knowledge could also be a fact that not everyone would know off the top of their heads, but that’s been generally verified and could be confirmed easily. For example: Missouri became a US state in 1821 Water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit A subordinating conjunction joins independent and dependent clauses. Riga is the capital of Latvia Naira is the currency of Nigeria Depending on its use, “which” can be a pronoun or an adjective When common knowledge not so common When thinking about whether something is common knowledge or not for academic purposes, consider your audience and the context. For example, if youre a psychology major then you could reasonably assume that the person reading your paper (i.e., your psychology professor), will already have a good understanding of Pavlovs classical conditioning theory and wouldn’t need you to cite a source about it. However, if you were referencing this theory as part of a history or English paper, it would be reasonable to cite your sources to allow your lecturer to look it up. Ask yourself: Who is my audience? What can I reasonably assume they already know? Will they want to know where I got my information? If in doubt, always cite Using the above example, there are still many times when a psychology student would need to cite information when referencing Pavlovs classical conditioning theory. It all hinges on the question: “What can I reasonably assume that they already know?” For example, the following statement would need a source citation, as its very specific information that may not even be known to some psychologists: The Nobel-prize winning physiologist Ivan Petrovich Pavlov was inspired by the progressive ideas of I.M. Sechenov, the father of Russian physiology. You should also always follow with the question, “Will they want to know where I got my information?” Even if your subject professor knows something, they might still want to check where you found the information and which sources you used for your research. If you need any help with formatting your citations correctly, youll find an MLA and APA citation generator at (other citation styles are also available). You can also find information on how to set out a works cited page MLA, how to do an annotated bibliography MLA style, and much more.

This book helped me put some of the situations and Essay Example For Students

This book helped me put some of the situations and Essay He feelings that I have experienced in my life into perspective and with more meaning. I could relate to many of the subjects that this book covered and could understand where the authors ideas originated. Not only can I see his ideas appearing in my own actions, but I also see them in males in their mid-forties to fifties. This observation supports the idea of us going from innocence to doubt and back to innocence. The first idea that stuck with me is the interpretation of the salmon and how it represented Christ. Because my thoughts on religion and god are so unclear in my life, it led me to interpret the whole situation differently and with different symbolism that is more adjacent with my life. I could still comprehend what the author was trying to say, but I couldnt relate to his interpretation. I can see how a boy might be introduced to something that is too powerful for him at the moment. The experience gives him a wound that is hard to recover from. For example, the act of ma king love is a wonderful thing if it is done in a pure environment. But, if a boy develops a relationship with an older woman and is not ready to lose his virginity, and the woman is pushing for it, he might enter into something that he is not ready to deal with. When a boy is put into an uncomfortable situation like this, he could receive wounds that could last for a lifetime. He will have been scarred by this woman and carry around a wound that is hard to heal and could effect the rest of his life. We will write a custom essay on This book helped me put some of the situations and specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now The next thing that stuck with me is the theory of the Red knight and how it represents aggression. This explains how we enter the stage of aggression. I havent entered this stage yet, but there are a number of people in my life that have definitely been lingering in this area for a long time. I wait for the day when they move on. One of my gymnastic coaches is still in the stage of aggression, although he seems to have harnessed it very well. He is working both as a lawyer and a coach. This combination is successful for him because he uses his aggression in court to help prove a point and in gym he really urges the kids on and pushes them just hard enough to get the most out of their workouts. I really admire him for his ability to manage his anger and never let it get the best of him, in spite of his high level of testosterone. It seems that during childhood, people develop through an intricate process of observing what their family and peers are doing and then trying it on for size to see if it works for them. Most of the characteristics that we take on, we later throw away, after discovering that they do not work for us. Many of the characteristics that we develop from this time remain with us for the rest of our lives. We continue to do things like a family member does or did. Some of the complexes that we develop when we are mere toddlers take us a lifetime to shed. It is during the whole stage of adolescence when we begin to doubt. During this stage we begin to find out who we really are. This process can only be achieved by sifting through the complexes we have developed, questioning them, and changing what we dont like. We build on what fits who we are. Although this process slows down, it still continues for the rest of our lives. .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd , .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd .postImageUrl , .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd , .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd:hover , .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd:visited , .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd:active { border:0!important; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd:active , .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Gulf Waar EssayRobert Johnson emphasizes that every human being has got to break away from their parents at some point in time, especially their mother-complex that lives inside each and every one of us. The character of Alison in The Millers Tale Essays

The character of Alison in The Millers Tale Essays The character of Alison in The Millers Tale Essay The character of Alison in The Millers Tale Essay The character of Alison in The Millers Tale is portrayed as the perfect vision of sexual desire. Her husband the carpenter, their lodger Nicholas and the parish clerk Absolon are all in various forms of pursuit of her throughout the tale, while Alisons role is little more than to observe their efforts. Her actions throughout the tale are far from moral, and so her initial description is important in portraying the kind of character with whom the reader is to be acquainted. She is shown as physically desirable, well groomed and enigmatic, in the sense that she is more mischievous than she seems. The description shows Alison to be the embodiment of female sexuality, making the ridiculous actions of the other characters more justifiable. The most obvious aspect of the description of Alison is that she is sexually desirable to men. While it is Chaucer who is writing the description, he is writing as though the Miller is describing her, and through the way in which Alison is described, it becomes obvious that the Miller is attracted to her. He begins the description at her ceint, starting the image of her at her girdle, somewhere below her waist. It then moves to her barmclooth, continuing to hover around her lower body, describing how her goore lies upon her thighs and buttocks, her lendes. The description then moves to her chest and her smok, and then returns to her girdle. By focusing on the sexual regions of her body, Chaucer shows that the Miller is interested in Alison sexually, more than as a wife. This is further implied by the line for any lord to leggen in his bedde preceding for any good yeman to wedde. Therefore it is clear that Alison is an object of lust. The Miller also shows that Alison is appealing to all the senses, calling her blissful on to see, softer than the wolle is of a wether and calling her mouth sweet as bragot. Playing on all the senses makes Alison more real and more enticing, so that the reader too is entranced by her desirability. A lot of the descriptions of Alison are comparisons to animals. It is particularly interesting to note the animals to which she is compared. Her body is compared to that of a wezele, in that it is gent and small. While the weasel is an apt simile for a petite and shapely body, it is also an animal renowned for being sly and sneaky, qualities displayed by Alison later in the tale. Therefore a seemingly superficial comparison to Alisons physique makes a far more negative reference to her character. The comparison to a colt implies Alisons wild spirit, but with it being a male animal it also reflects on her power. She is also compared to a kide or calf in that she can skippe and make game. This comment also has two levels. In a way it likens Alison to young animals showing her frisky, youthful nature. Also, with the animals being simple farm yard creatures as opposed to exotic, exciting animals, the story is kept at a fabliau level, as it is dealing with the commonplace.

What happens here, Stays here Las Vegas Campaign Essay

What happens here, Stays here Las Vegas Campaign - Essay Example epresents a tremendous revenue stream for the city of Las Vegas, requiring the city to put forth sizeable effort at attracting mass quantities of consumers to its nightlife and recreational facilities. Las Vegas, as a unique American destination, maintains a significant strategic advantage over traditional product brands, as the business does not have to rely on measuring market share against competitors. There are few destinations with the same quality of spectacle and recreation provided by the entire city of Las Vegas, thus the city can focus solely on its product features, benefits and services as a unique travel destination. Though other cities across the country require tourism dollars, Vegas is in a class by itself for adult entertainment. The marketing focus is also to encourage international consumers to visit the city as part of Las Vegas’ marketing focus (Fowler, B.1). Up until only recently, Las Vegas had been positioned as a family destination, with previous marketing efforts focusing on the theme park varieties and water-park recreation provided by the city to lure family revenue dollars. One notable author describes the previous Las Vegas marketing campaign, focused on family, as a conglomerate of â€Å"T-shirt packs of doughnut inhalers roaming the casinos like livestock† (Anderson, 1). This represented a marketing focus where the targeted consumer was the family demographic, potentially creating conflict between the more adult-oriented consumer who looked at Vegas as an escape for adult entertainment and exciting, casino recreation. The shift in marketing focus from family-oriented to a more risquà © campaign illustrates a total change in target market focus. Las Vegas marketers also maintain a very mass advertising philosophy where individual target consumers are not the focus, but appeals to the mass consumer audience comprised of business professionals, young adults, and any other age or background demographic available in the United States.

What is critical theory, its purpose and Robert Cox quotations, Essay

What is critical theory, its purpose and Robert Cox quotations, purpose and who is it for - Essay Example king of a problem-solving theory under the process of normatively and factually criticizing the original framework of international relations and beliefs thereof (Marilli). It would involve realization of a whole new historical configuration for the world that used to be known and established in the light of societies that have become accustomed to Marxist principles or the type in which central powers are normally attributed to a capitalist nation as in the U.S (Moolakkattu). Cox occurs to reserve the position that, since the world has undergone mechanisms of change apart from the ordinary cycle in several aspects, critical theory ought to be employed in seeking to study how the mutating political economy may be dealt with on a level that requires mutual global adjustment. Apparently, the purpose herein is to gauge the readiness of America, especially, in acknowledging a tremendous shift in economic and socio-political framework of a world order where its pursuit for world dominance is at stake. In an interview via ‘Theory Talks’, Cox claims â€Å"I think the biggest challenge is the relative decline of the U.S. in relation to the rest of the world and whether and how America will adjust to a world in which it can no longer presume to lead.† Through the critical theory, Eurasia is analyzed to bear the capacity of perceiving America’s encirclement of influence as triggered by the ‘war on terror’ which the Bush regim e initiated and the administration of Obama acquires the pressure of keeping with. A Dolls House: Appearance vs Reality

A Dolls House: Appearance vs Reality Choosing to live your life independently or dependently is a life changing moment: it comes without warning, and can turn your whole life upside down. Either way, nothing will ever be the same. The book, A Dolls House, by Henrik Ibsen, is about characters who are all dealing with the transition of becoming either dependent or independent. They may seem happy to other people and to the readers at first, but their appearances are really a lie. Appearance and reality are often misunderstood; just because someone may seem happy, this does not mean they lead a rich and more compelling life in comparison to someone else. Mrs. Lindes journey from independence to marriage is a foil to Noras life. At the beginning of the play Nora may seem dependant but she is actually just as independent as Mrs. Linde claims to be. In order for Nora to pay the loan that she owed Krogstad, Nora saved money that Torvald gave her for dresses, and she also found a little job. Nora says, [she] was lucky enough to get a lot of copying [done and] to do so, (à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦) [she] locked [her]self up and sat writing every evening until quite late at night. Many a time [she] was desperately tired, but all was the same it was a tremendous pleasure to sit there working and earning money. It was like being a man (Ibsen 13). When Nora says she felt like a man it meant she felt like she was taking on responsibilities, and having a sense of purpose in life. In other words to feel like a man in the eighteen-hundreds it must have meant you were more independent. In Noras mind she must have thought she was just as self-ruling as Mrs. Linde. Although Mrs. Linde may work, she dislikes it, and it has also aged her terribly. Mrs. Linde says she needs someone to depend on because she is quite alone in the world-[her] life is so dreadfully empty and [she] feel[s] so forsaken. There is not the least pleasure in working for ones self. Niles, give me someone and something to work for (53). Mrs. Linde may seem to be a strong willed women, but in reality she needs someone to provide for her and depend on. At the end of the play Nora chooses a life of independence by leaving Torvald while Mrs. Linde reunites with her long love Mr. Krogstad, and chooses a life of dependence. Although Mrs. Linde and Nora may have lived their lives in an opposite direction; Mrs. Linde and Nora Helmer both started a life of marriage without true love for their husbands. Mrs Linde married her ex-husband because her father passed away and she had to raise her younger brothers. She married him primarily for financial stability because her mother was alive then [but] was bedridden and helpless, and [she] had to provide for my two younger brothers; so [she] did not think [she] was justified in refusing his offer (9). The fact that Mrs. Linde refers to her ex-husbands proposal as an offer means she saw it as a business transaction. In other words this is a symbiotic relationship. Mrs. Linde needed financial stability and her ex-husband needed a wife. On the other hand Nora married Mr. Helmer even though she didnt love him. It seems as though she was influenced by her fathers opinions: when I was at home with Papa he told me his opinion about everything, and so I had the same opinions; and if I differed from him I concealed the fact, because he would not have liked it. And when I came to live with you I simply transferred from Papas hands to yours. You arranged everything according to your own taste, and so I got the same taste as you-or else I pretended to (66). Noras father had brainwashed Nora to such a point that she took on the same beliefs as him with out even noticing it. Nora then married Torvald and became even more oblivious to fact that she was being controlled. It is quite stumbling how life has forced both Nora Helmer and Mrs. Linde to start a life of marriage without true love for their husbands. As the play progresses we see how Nora is actually more independent then we expected her to be. We also find out that although Mrs. Linde works for herself, she needs a purpose in life, which to her means having a family. Although we only discover that Nora never loved Mr. Helmer at the end of a Dolls House, throughout the whole play there have been small amounts rebellious behavior from Nora towards Mr Helmer. Although Mr. Helmer had forbidden Nora from eating macaroons, she still does it anyways: What, macaroons? I thought they were forbidden here. Yes, but theses are some Christine gave me. (17). Throughout the play Nora has shown signs of independence even though the readers were to believe she was not. Also Nora was forbidden to take out a loan by Torvald and by the law. Nora had taken out the loan despite the laws and Torvalds wishes. Appearances can be deceiving; just because a person may appear to be content, and carefree with their life, it does not necessarily mean they actually life a life of glamour. In the book A Dolls House Mrs Linde is the force of truth in Noras life. Although Mrs. Linde may not be the person to ask for marital advice she has lived a life similar to Noras just backwards. At the beginning of A Dolls House readers believe Nora is just a silly, selfish and spoiled character, but later readers find out that she is actually a strong willed and intelligent woman. Just like Mrs. Linde Nora proves she is able to work for herself, and that she understands business transactions without a males approval. On the other hand Mrs. Linde feels she needs a husband and children to have a purpose in life. In other words Mrs. Linde has chosen a life of dependence with Mr. Krogstand while Nora prefers to live her life independently and liberal minded. Clearly Mrs. Lindes and Noras appearances at the beginnin g of the play do not reflect their reality. Sadly as in the play this may be a reality for many people today. Does your appearance to others also reflect your reality? Work Cited Ibsen, Henrik, A Dolls House. New York: Dover, 1992. Print

Ernest Hemingway :: essays research papers

Ernest Hemingway lived his life as he wanted. His writing touched the hearts of millions. His sentences were short and to the point but his novels strong and unforgettable. He wrote about what he felt like writing about. On July 21, 1899, Ernest Hemingway was born. He was created by Dr. Clarence Edmonds and Grace Hall Hemingway. His hometown was a small town named Oak Park. Oak Park was in Illinois. His father was a practicing doctor, and later taught him how to hunt and fish. His mother on the other hand had wished that he would become a professional musician. Hemingway did not like his mother and when he grew up he would call her "the old bitch". He grew up in a somewhat religious environment. He went to Oak Park and River Forest High School, which is where he realized his writing gift. Besides writing, other activities that he loved included swimming, and boxing. When he was18 years old he had an important decision to make he could either move to Kansas city, which was growing more and more every day, or he could go to collage. His final choice was that he would move to Kansas City. In Kansas City he got a job as a cub reporter on the Kansas City Star. At the train station his father, who latter on in Ernest's life would commit suicide which would totally disgust Ernest, kissed his son goodbye with tears in his eyes. This exact moment in time would be the soul purpose for a book he wrote called "For Whom the Bell Tolls". One of the reasons why he wrote that book is because he felt so much older than his father at that time that he could hardly bear it any longer. While he was at Kansas City he was quite and did not stand out much. He stayed to himself. He went through a little culture shock due to the fact that Kansas City was a lot more complex than Oak Hill was. His writing style was first introduced by the Star. His writing was brief, and to the point. His writing had to be like that at the time because he was a news writer, but he would carry that style over to fiction when the time came. In May of 1918, Hemingway wanted to join the Army but could not due to a defective left eye which he inherited from his mother.

Intro to Finance Essay

An efficient financial system promotes intermediaries that successfully link â€Å"savers† from â€Å"borrowers† (Mankiw). There are two widely-known financial intermediaries namely the banks and mutual funds. Banks are highly accessible to the general public are generally more cost advantageous that direct lending. Generally, the banks main purpose in the economy is to take in deposits from savers and â€Å"use these deposits to make loans to people who want to borrow† (Mankiw, N. Gregory, 2001, Principles of Economics, p. 557). Banks incur costs by paying interest on these deposits and earn from these by charging higher interest rates on loan borrowers. Second to this, banks play an important role in the economy as they â€Å"facilitate the purchases of goods and services by allowing people to write checks against their deposits† (Mankiw, N. Gregory, 2001, Principles of Economics, p. 557). In this manner, the economy benefits from banks by this accessible medium of exchange. Unlike stocks or bonds which are not as immediate, checks make it easier for the public to exercise their monetary transactions. Mutual funds, on the other hand, are institutions that use the proceeds of selling shares in buying portfolios of stocks and bonds where they derive their profits. The financial markets become more accessible and efficient because mutual funds allow people with small savings to become owners and creditors of numerous companies. Also, mutual funds allow its shareholders the benefit of risk diversification wherein a single fund can carry a roster of diverse portfolios in stocks and bonds. A broker can either be an individual or a corporate entity that earns a fee-based profit by performing buy and sell orders from investors and/ or clients. A good example of this is a brokerage firm that specializes in trading company stocks and securities. A broker’s main functions in the financial market would include basic execution of buying and selling shares, and financial advisory to clients regarding the management of their shares/ stocks. With the emergence of automation and popular online brokerage firms, traditional brokers have redefined their place in the industry. Most popular online brokerage firms such as Ameritrade and E*Trade offer lower fees to investors as opposed to traditional brokers. Financial and Investment Advisory are also automated online via innovative investment software tools. With information becoming more accessible because of the internet, traditional brokers are now transitioning into online brokers wherein online orders are still routed to and monitored by them; and with reduced client-interface for advisories.

A Leader At A Senior Leader - 1162 Words

When I filled out the diagnostic score sheet for a senior leader I know, I was not surprised by the results. This leader is nearing the end of her career and I have often heard her joke that she just doesn’t have â€Å"any adrenaline left† and this is reflected in her leadership style. The total score I gave this leader was 12 with 4.5 for Noble Purpose, 3 for Ceaseless Ambition, 3.5 for Candor and 1 for Passion. The area where I feel this leader excels is Noble Purpose. This was a courageous move for her and I was not certain how it would be received, however, I am pleased to say, the results have been positive.
